Juvenile Fantasy Book Picks

Do you like animals? Do you like fantasy? Do you like reading? If so, here are some recommendations for you! These recs come from our staff member Sydney.

Guardians of Ga’hoole – The Capture (Lasky, Kathryn) Guardians of Ga’hoole follows a group of owls and their adventures, mainly the young barn owl Soren, and how he and his friends begin to learn about their lives, and the existence of clans and colonies, and the dark past of their people. Dive in feathers first to bear witness to this outlandish tale of bravery.

Warrior Cats – Into the Wild (Hunter, Erin) Warrior Cats is a book series with multiple arcs about multiple clans of feral cats that live in a forest. The books follows the adventures, drama, and other aspects of their life. Read and explore the inner workings of these clans of cats, and imagine yourself in their shoes – or paws, rather.

Survivors – The Empty City (Hunter, Erin) Survivors is a series about a pack of formerly domesticated dogs and their adventures of survival in the wilderness, while helping their team member Lucky find her way home after an Earthquake had separated her from her owner. Fall into a world of survival, emotions, and dogs.

Wings of Fire – The Dragonet Prophecy (Sutherland, Tui) Wings of Fire is a wonderful fantasy series surrounding dragons and their clans and tribes that exist in their fantastical world. It dives deep into their existence, their relations with one another, and their interactions with other creatures that live on the continents they inhabit. Join the scaled beasts and learn about their lives and universe.

Dragons in a Bag – Dragons in a Bag (Elliott, Zetta) Dragons in a Bag is a series about a young boy named Jax who spend his days with his elderly neighbor named Ma, while his mother goes to court to fight their eviction. But amidst the drama, Jax learns Ma is no ordinary woman, and is in fact a witch who needs his help delivering dragons. Get ready to go on a magical adventure with Jax and the dragons.

Foxcraft – The Taken (Iserles, Inbali) Foxcraft is an exciting tale about a young fox named Isla, who lived happily with her family just outside the confines of humans, until the day her den and family were attacked by savage foxes. Isla must learn to adapt, navigate, and survive while holding onto hope that her family is still alive out there. Get ready to explore the world from the perspective of a fox when you read this series.

Trot & Cap’n Bill – Sea Fairies (Baum, Frank) Trot & Cap’n Bill is a fun series about a Vietnamese American surfer girl, and Cap’n Bill, her cranky one eyed feline companion after they catch a wave too big, and wipe out, ending up in a magical underwater kingdom where an long standing battle continues to rage. Hold your nose because this is going to be a fun yet long dive into the world of the ocean.
