Family Fun Month By: Library Staff August 6, 2021

Each year, Family Fun Month is celebrated throughout the month of August.

We have compiled a list of FREE Family Fun activities available from the library, in North Library, and surrounding areas.

Family Fun from the Library

  • Chalk Portrait Challenge
    Grab some chalk, design a photo scene, pose with family/friends/pets, snap a photo, and share the photo in the comments below to be entered in a drawing for a Heyn’s Ice Cream gift certificate. Drawing will take place at the end of August. Not on Facebook? Email the image to Melanie at mharrison@northlibertyiowa.org with subject Chalk Portrait Challenge. Please note that emailed images will be shared on Facebook.
  • Adventure Pass
    The North Liberty Library has joined other libraries across the state to offer Iowa Library Adventure Pass which offers free passes to special attractions to North Liberty residents and library patrons.
  • Kanopy
    An on-demand streaming video platform available to residents of North Liberty and rural Johnson County. Enjoy critically-acclaimed movies, inspiring documentaries, award-winning foreign films and more via Desktop, Mobile and Roku using your library card.

Family Fun in North Liberty

North Liberty has several family friendly events coming up in August as part of North Liberty’s Summer Slate

  • Fairy Trail
    Small doors along the North Liberty Recreation Trail between Penn and Cherry streets discovered by the city’s Parks Department
  • ONE Pack
    Get outside and get to know the world around you. The Recreation Department offers Outdoor Nature Education — or ONE — Packs for families to check out and use in our parks and nearby nature areas.
  • Recreation Fun Packs
    Portable games that can be checked out from the Recreation Department, taken to your backyard, neighborhood or local park to play, then returned when done.
  • Scavenger Hunt
    All month. A new North Liberty photo scavenger hunt game is available for you to check out and complete at your leisure. Battle against another team or play on your own!
  • Eastern Iowa Circus
    On Aug. 14, the Eastern Iowa Circus will perform a free, outdoor show complete with fire dancing and breathing, aerial performances, juggling, hoop and acro-balance.
  • Concert in the Park & Fireworks
    On Aug. 21, the city is hosting a summer sendoff party in Penn Meadows Park with a free concert and fireworks display.
  • Playground Crawl
    Fire up the carpool text thread and make group shirts because your college experience will finally pay off at this killer event set for Saturday, Aug. 28, in North Liberty: a playground crawl.

Free Events in ICR

  • Rock the Chalk
    Friday, Aug. 6, check out MidWestOne Bank’s Annual Community Chalk Art Festival in downtown Iowa City.
  • Iowa Arts Festival
    The weekend of Aug. 13-15 enjoy the Iowa Arts Festival, an award-winning, weekend-long community celebration featuring over 110 local and national visual artists.
  • Latino Fest Iowa City
    This exciting celebration will highlight Latino traditions, dances, food, and music.
  • Jazz Under the Stars
    Live Jazz at Noelridge Park in Cedar Rapids each Thursday night in August.
  • Rock the Block
    Rock the Block is NewBo City Market’s free weekly concert series. Each summer a variety of local bands take the Bankers Trust Stage in the Market Yard and fill Friday nights with live music!
